How We Appraise

Our rigorous methodology ensures accurate, defensible valuations

Every appraisal we conduct follows a systematic process designed to deliver the most accurate market value while maintaining the highest ethical standards.

1

Initial Consultation

We begin by understanding your needs: insurance, estate, sale, or personal knowledge. We discuss the items, their history, and your goals for the appraisal.

2

Physical Examination

Each item is carefully examined for condition, materials, construction techniques, signatures, marks, and any signs of restoration or damage.

3

Authentication

We verify age, origin, and attribution using specialized knowledge, reference materials, and when necessary, consultation with outside experts.

4

Market Research

We analyze recent auction results, dealer inventories, and private sales to establish current fair market value, replacement value, or liquidation value.

5

Provenance Research

When possible, we trace ownership history, exhibition records, and publication references that can significantly impact value.

6

Documentation

We photograph each item and compile all findings into a comprehensive, easy-to-understand report with detailed descriptions.

7

Report Delivery

You receive a formal appraisal document that meets USPAP standards, suitable for insurance, tax, or legal purposes.

8

Consultation

We review the results with you, answer questions, and provide guidance on next steps whether selling, insuring, or preserving your items.

Value Definitions We Use

Fair Market Value: The price at which an item would change hands between a willing buyer and willing seller, neither being under any compulsion to buy or sell.

Replacement Value: The cost to replace an item with one of similar age, quality, and condition. Used primarily for insurance purposes.

Liquidation Value: The price an item would bring in a forced sale, such as an estate sale or auction with limited marketing time.
